A new home has been created by extending an existing end-of-terrace house onto the site of an adjacent, dis-used 1970’s storage building.
The new external brick façade draws heavily on the proportions of the original end-of-terrace to remain in keeping with the historic context, but internally a lightweight timber frame has been used for the majority of the superstructure to minimise foundation volumes and reduce embodied carbon.
The structural design approach was to re-purpose the existing developed site and re-use the existing structural fabric where possible. This was challenging for the superstructure given the very different building functions and aesthetics. However, a considered and pragmatic approach to the foundations allowed for re-use where possible and significantly reduced the extent of any new foundations required.
